What 200 calories looks like for different foods

Some foods have significantly more Calories than others but what does the difference actually look like. Each of the photographs below represents 200 Calories of the particular type of food. When you consider that an entire plate of broccoli contains the same number of Calories as a small spoonful of peanut butter, you might think twice the next time you decide what to eat. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average adult needs to consume about 2000 – 2500 Calories to maintain their weight. In other words, you have a fixed amount of Calories to “spend” each day; based on the following pictures, which would you eat?

This is a good reminder that you do not have to starve yourself to eat healthy. Choose more fruits and vegetables! You can eat a significantly larger quantity of those than processed meat products and refined sugars. Another tip; when you are eating mainly fruits and vegetables, make sure you are eating enough. The biggest problem I run into is underestimating my hunger. I’m more likely to choose poorly when I haven’t planned for enough food and I need to get a snack on the fly. Always plan ahead!

  2. It’s good to see visual comparison because it helps us realize the stark differences . For me it is a reminder to eat larger quantities of fruits and veggies to sustain. Thanks!
